Donovan Runkle is a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property group and focuses his practice in patent, trademark and copyright law. 

He has experience in a wide array of technological areas, including automotive components, fuel cells, solar cells, rechargeable batteries, medical devices, medical implants, diagnostic kits, biomaterials, nano-materials, nano-biomedical applications, drilling fluids, thin film deposition, material compositions and materials processing technologies. In addition, he has extensive experience in conducting intellectual property searches, landscape analyses, white space analyses and corporate patent portfolio analyses. 

Donovan serves a diverse client base ranging from Fortune 500 companies to individual inventors, focusing on the mechanical, electromechanical and heat transfer arts. In his patent practice, he works with inventors and associates internationally to prepare and prosecute both domestic and international patent applications through issuance. Donovan also has experience in preparing patentability, clearance and invalidity opinions for his clients. 

Prior to practicing law, Donovan worked at Lake Shore Cryotronics in their Research and Development department. In addition, prior to practicing law, Donovan worked at Tenneco in their Catalytic Converter and Advanced Materials Engineering departments. 

Donovan’s education in materials engineering, in combination with his diverse technical background, enables him to better understand his clients’ complex inventions to protect their innovations. 

Representative Matters

  • Advising in-house counsel and corporate officers on patent drafting and patent prosecution strategies;
  • Prepared an Invalidity Opinion for a constant velocity joint vent valve;
  • Prepared a United States and European patent applications directed to various torque cancelation technologies;
  • Preparing United States patent applications directed to composite materials, crash safety features, hybrid vehicle drive trains, all-wheel drive and limited slip differential technologies;
  • Performed legal research on the use of trademarks in company email addresses
