Shawn Nelson is a member of Marshall & Melhorn’s Education Law and Labor & Employment Law practice groups. Shawn represents boards of education, private schools, large and small employers, and individuals in a wide range of legal matters. He has been recognized in Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in America since 2023 for his exceptional work in Education Law and Labor & Employment Law.
In his education law practice, Shawn advises clients on all aspects of education law, including personnel and student issues, political subdivision immunity, constitutional law, FERPA, public meetings and records law, special education law, labor and employment issues, and Title IX compliance. He has also served as assistant general counsel of a large, urban public school district with various legal issues.
In his labor and employment law practice, Shawn represents public and private sector employers in matters such as wage and hour compliance, employment and severance agreements, workplace investigations, collective bargaining, and union-related issues. He provides daily support to human resources departments, assisting with employee discipline, policies and procedures, employee handbooks, and compliance audits. Shawn also defends clients against claims involving discrimination, harassment, employee termination, FMLA, constitutional violations, and more.
Shawn is a member of the firm’s recruiting committee. He has served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Magistrate Judge Vernelis K. Armstrong of the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio and the Honorable Judge Arlene Singer of the Sixth District Court of Appeals.
